grandma rosalie begins life

In high school she had to take Physics instead of Biology or Chemistry. After graduating, she worked at a restaurant in Deluth. At 16 she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved in with her sister Doris. They lived in hotels for about $10 per week. It was WWII. Grandma worked at restaurants, war factories and other places and had a lot of fun with all the young people she worked with. Doris and Rosalie lived in those Wisconsin hotels for about three years before moving to Chicago. Chicago was great until Doris got involved with a fellow. For Doris, it was one after the other! But with this guy she decided to stay with. They were still living in hotels because they didn’t want too many possessions. Really all they wanted was their clothes and personal belongings. No lease, no furniture, no dishes! They had pretty dresses and things, and that was all they had and all they wanted. They were happy. They loved the feeling. Grandma then decided to move because she wanted a change and Doris had her new boyfriend. She set off for Hollywood. She moved in with her friend’s apartment. The girls went out, had lots of fun and dated lots of men in the service, but the guys were just about to head off to war and she never thought of marrying one. But then she met John Canton. John was stationed in Miramar. They knew each other three weeks before getting married! Out of the blue, they decided to marry. They didn’t know how, so they went down to the San Diego courthouse and asked. The clerk said they needed a license. But before they could get a license they needed to get a blood test. Everyone in those days had to get a blood test before they could get married. Probably to check for a social disease or something. But the blood test results took three days to get back. Luckily they convinced the clinic to do a rush job. They got their blood tests back in two hours.  They were married by the judge at 4pm.  Rosalie was 21.  No one they knew witnessed the marriage, probably just the secretary signed as witnesses! That was the beginning.
